Dominican Monastery of St. Jude, Marbury, Alabama 36051
Dear Friends, Prayerful greetings from Marbury. We commend to your prayers the soul of our Sister Mary of the Immaculate Heart, O.P. whom God called home on August 21, 2008. Please pray for the repose of her soul. Sister entered the Dominican Monastery of St. Jude on August 22, 1951. Prior to her entrance, she graduated from DePaul University, worked as a research chemist for Pure Oil, then returned to the University as Dean of Women in the School of Liberal Arts. In those years she promoted devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in response to Our Lady’s request at Fatima. She helped form a Chapter of the Dominican Third Order where she was a powerful influence in drawing others to answer God’s call to Religious life. In the Monastery Sister Mary of the Immaculate Heart used her many talents for the benefit of the Community. She served as Sacristan and secretary, played the violin, accordion, piano and organ. For countless years it was Sister’s task to operate the mimeograph, an ancient machine requiring devotion and skill and an uncommon measure of patience. Her most enduring contribution to the welfare of her Sisters was her service as cook. During our gardening and milking era, she met the challenge of super abundance in ingenious ways, turning out wonderful meals and filling the freezer with future “victuals.” Sister Mary of the Immaculate Heart proved a faithful Guard of Honor to Our Blessed Mother in her fidelity to the Rosary, her Hour of Adoration, her practice of praying the Ave’s and the Chaplet of Mercy during other times of the day. Once a friend or family member asked her prayers, they were remembered by name forever. As her ability to do her work in the Community lessened, her prayers for us who were busy in the kitchen or elsewhere, increased. We trust those prayers will bring still more powerful blessings upon you and us. God grant eternal rest and glory to the soul of our Sister Mary of the Immaculate Heart.
